news. our chief white house correspondent jessica yellin is standing by. our pentagon correspondent barbara starr is standing by. and our chief political analyst gloria borger is standing by. gloria, let me start with you. you just spoke with some people up on the hill. what are they saying? >> i just spoke with diane finestein. she calls this a tragic story for a human being. she says people may start saying he's a scapegoat for benghazi and the controversy in benghazi. she says that is absolutely false. she said i know what the personal story is here. it is not a coverstory. what she did say to me, wolf, is that she didn't understand why the immediate departure. you know, there are congressional hearings that are coming up next week. mr. morell will be testifying on behalf of the central intelligence agency. she says there are going to be at least three hearings and they will continue to ask who did what when and what was missing. but she said this is a deeply personal story for him. he made an egregious personal mistake. and at this point she has not given any thought to who she
faces a serious new foreign policy challenge. there's word today from the pentagon that in the closing days of the election campaign iranian jets fired on a u.s. drone. let's get the details from our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. what are you learning, barbara? >> wolf, it was last thursday just one week ago we now know two iranian russian made jets very workable flew out into the persian gulf into international air space according to the pentagon and fired at a predator drone, a u.s. air force predator drone that the pentagon says was on a routine surveillance mission. although that mission was classified. here's what the pentagon had to say about it all. >> we believe this is the first time that an unmanned aircraft has been shot at over international waters in the arabian gulf. >> is that an act of war? >> i'm not going to get into legal labels. the reality is that we have a wide range of options as i said before to protect our assets and our forces in the region and will do so when necessary. we have communicated to the iranians that we will continue to conduct surveillance
pentagon correspondent barbara starr. she's getting new information on paula broadwell. what are you learning, barbara? >> wolf, some really stunning new information. cnn has learned from two u.s. officials that paula broadwell's security clearance has been suspended. she is a serving reservist, if you will, with the u.s. army, a military intelligence analyst. as such, she would at least have a secret level security clearance. we are now told that security clearance suspended pending the outcome of several investigations. we went to the army to ask them for an official response. they will not say anything except the following. and let me read it to you. "appropriate actions with regard to this officer's clearance and access have been taken." the statement goes onto say "the army has been cooperating with federal law enforcement authorities in this matter. and those actions are ongoing." wolf, you will recall a couple of days ago the fbi went to broadwell's home. we all saw the video of fbi agents taking away boxes of material, computers. the discussion centering around what kind of c
the benghazi attack and when he knew it. let's get right to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. barbara, what are you learning? >> wolf, i have just spoken to someone, a long-standing source who has spoken to david petraeus. this is someone on his level professionally. this person is directly familiar from petraeus with his thinking, with petraeus' thinking about what he will tell congress tomorrow about the benghazi attacks. david petraeus wants to tell congress that he knew almost immediately after the september 11th attacks that the group ansar al sharia, that al qaeda sympathizing group in libya was responsible for the attacks. here's how it goes. in petraeus' view there are two questions on the table. who was responsible? and that is ansar al sharia. he has intelligence he believes to back that up. second question, what was their motivation? that is where some of the confusion may lie. what this source says petraeus told him is there were about 20 intelligence reports that began to come in blaming that video -- that anti-islamic video that sparked the riots in cairo. that's the con
